What is a Water Cockroach

How to Kill German Cockroachs1

Cockroaches have been around for close to 300 million years. Some of the species of the roach have certain similarities and in most cases are mistaken for each other.

The water cockroach is a type of roach that especially likes living in water while the ordinary cockroach commonly lives in the house. Both roaches are nasty pests with similar foul habits.

They recycle decaying organic matter. The ugly pests spread germs and filth in the house. Once a house becomes infested with roaches, it becomes difficult to get rid of them.

The ideal method of preventing infestation is through cleanliness. A clean home will not provide the water, shelter and food needed for cockroaches to thrive.

Even though the cockroach and water bug look alike, in most cases, they are referred interchangeably. Even then, there are some few notable differences that distinguish them.

These include the habitat, diet, chances of infestation and biting habits.

Identifying the differences helps one to establish the type you are dealing with and the best protocol for examination.

Terminology

Water cockroach is a broad term referring to various kinds of bugs within the Hemiptera insect order.

The giant waterbug is the most common. It is also known as a toe bitter, alligator tick or electric light bug.

There are several other species of cockroaches like the American reddish-brown cockroach which is mistaken for waterbugs as it gravitate towards damp areas or sewers.

Water cockroach or water bug may refer to various pests:

True bugs

Back Swimmers

· The nepomorpha or true water bug includes such insects as back swimmers, creeping water bugs and giant water bugs
· Several other true bug insects collectively referred to as water bugs

· Heteroptera

· The Periplaneta Americana or American cockroach
· The Blattella germanica or German cockroach
· The Blatta orientalis or Oriental cockroach

Food and Habitat

Just like the name suggests, water bugs are commonly found in water. Although cockroaches are adaptable and are able to live in various habitats, they are not aquatic as waterbugs. The diet is another notable difference between the two.

Cockroaches are unscrupulous scavengers that dine on any source of food available including fermented or decayed food materials and garbage. However, water bugs are more likely to kill and hunt insects, tadpoles, small fish and minnows.

While water bugs are attracted to wet areas, cockroaches are attracted to humid areas. As such, cockroaches prefer to live inside the house while water bugs are found outside.

COCKROACH BITE

Appearance and Risk of Bite

Both waterbugs and cockroaches have bodies that are oval in shape. Waterbugs have an average length of 2 inches while the size of a cockroach varies according to species.

The German cockroach for example is about 1/2 inch long while the American cockroach has an average length of 1.5 inches.

A water bug is black or dark brown in color with paddle-like legs.

Cockroaches on the other hand have an orange-brown color.

While there are no confirmed reports of cockroach bites on people, water bugs indeed bite people.

The process is creepy and the bites are really painful. Waterbugs extract liquid tissue and ingest digestive juices in the body.

Reproduction

Cockroaches lay their eggs in an ootheca or egg case carried with the roach. On the other hand, water bugs lay their eggs in debris or floating vegetation.

Methods of Extermination

Even though waterbugs bite, they only do so only if their environment has been invaded.

Roaches create a nuisance by infesting in homes and other different areas. The extermination methods are almost similar.

However, control of water cockroaches focuses on minimizing unnecessary sources of water to discourage the aquatic creatures.

Control of cockroaches includes pest identification through practices of hygiene sanitation such as washing dirty dishes, removing garbage, setting baits, traps, and use of insecticides.

Professional extermination may be required beyond this point.

Method

Step 1

Thoroughly clean your dishes and kitchen. Get rid of all clutter from the countertops.

Empty the kitchen drawers and cabinets. Use a scouring sponge dipped in a solution of one gallon of water and two tablespoons of grease –cutting detergent.

If possible, remove the cabinet shelves and scrub them individually. Replace the drawer liners and shelves with new ones.

Get rid of all expired foods. Toss all plastics, paper bags, cardboard boxes and other kitchen clutter where roaches can shelter. Throw away food containers that can’t be tightly sealed.

Step 2

Pull the refrigerator and stove from the wall and scrub the interiors and all surfaces. To remove grease and stubborn stain dirt, apply a grease-cutting spray cleaner.

Open the refrigerator and stove drawers and clean them thoroughly. Remove racks and shelves and scrub them individually.

Clean beihnd stove

From the stovetop and oven, clean all the grease. Through their cleaning cycle, run the self-cleaning ovens. Throw away deteriorated or expired food inside the fridge.

Clean all debris and dust from the underside then to the back of the fridge and stove using a vacuum cleaner and whisk broom.

Scrub the floor clean, pay special attention to the refrigerator, stove and along the edges where the floor meets cabinets and walls.

Step 3

Seal any crevice or crack that cockroaches may use to gain entry to the home. Caulk the crevices and cracks in sills, foundations, outside walls and windows. Caulk any opening where lines of utility passes through the floors or walls. Seal off moisture sources and repair the plumbing leaks.

Declutter and clean other house areas like closets and bathrooms to discourage cockroaches from migrating. Put roach traps along floor edges and inside cabinets to trap any occasional invader. Monitor any trap. An increase in number of trapped cockroaches is an indication that an infestation is in progress.
